Overview

About the Kaghan Valley and Babusar Pass Trek

The Kaghan Valley in Mansehra district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is one of Pakistan's most accessible and most visited mountain valleys, running approximately 155 kilometres from Balakot at the valley entrance to Naran and then continuing to Babusar Pass at 4,173 metres. The valley combines the lush green character of the western Himalayas, where the monsoon arrives with enough force to maintain dense forests and meadows, with high alpine scenery and a historic road route that once connected the subcontinent to Central Asia. Saif ul Malook Lake, a glacial lake at 3,224 metres surrounded by peaks reaching 5,000 metres, is the centrepiece of the Kaghan tourist circuit and one of the most celebrated natural sites in Pakistan.

The Kaghan Valley and Babusar Pass Trek combines driving and walking through the full length of the valley from Balakot to the pass, with excursions to Saif ul Malook Lake, Lulusar Lake, and the alpine meadows above Naran. The total itinerary is 7 to 10 days and provides a comprehensive experience of a different mountain ecosystem from the high-altitude desert of the Karakoram.

Route and Highlights

The drive from Islamabad to Balakot at the Kaghan Valley entrance takes approximately 3 hours via the Hazara Motorway. From Balakot the valley road runs north through Kawai, Paras, and Shogran (a hill resort at 2,362 metres with views across to the Kaghan peaks) to Naran at 2,409 metres, the main tourist town of the valley. Naran is the base for excursions to Saif ul Malook Lake (10 kilometres east by jeep or a 3-hour walk) and to the upper valley toward Lulusar Lake and Babusar Pass.

Saif ul Malook Lake

Saif ul Malook at 3,224 metres is the most famous lake in Pakistan's mountain regions. The lake is oval, approximately 2.5 kilometres long, with water that ranges from deep blue in morning light to turquoise in afternoon sun, reflecting the surrounding peaks including Malika Parbat at 5,291 metres and the lower ridges of the Kaghan range. The lake is named after the protagonist of a famous Punjabi romantic epic, Saif ul Malook, who is said to have fallen in love with a fairy princess at this lake. The mythological association has given the lake a special place in Pakistani cultural imagination. The approach by jeep from Naran or on foot via a well-maintained trail through alpine meadows takes 3 to 4 hours walking.

Babusar Pass

Babusar Pass at 4,173 metres is the highest point of the trek and links the Kaghan Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the Chilas district of Gilgit-Baltistan. The pass is the historic route used by traders, armies, and travellers between the subcontinent and Central Asia for centuries before the Karakoram Highway was built. The road over the pass is open from late June through mid-October depending on snowfall. From the pass the view north into the Chilas Valley and south back over the Kaghan Valley takes in a dramatic contrast: the green monsoon-fed slopes of Kaghan to the south and the drier, more austere Karakoram landscape to the north.

Best Season

June through September is the main season. July and August are the busiest months with the highest domestic tourist traffic. June is excellent for wildflowers and late snow on the higher sections. September is increasingly quiet after the summer school holidays and offers good conditions for a more peaceful experience of the lake and the pass. Babusar Pass is closed from October to late June due to snow.

Difficulty

The Kaghan Valley and Babusar Pass Trek is moderate and accessible to most healthy adults. The itinerary combines driving with walking excursions of 3 to 6 hours. The maximum altitude at Babusar Pass (4,173 m) is significant but reached by vehicle with brief walking periods, allowing reasonable acclimatization from the valley base at Naran (2,409 m) before pushing to the pass. The walk to Saif ul Malook Lake from Naran is a 3 to 4 hour moderate hike on a well-maintained path. No technical equipment is required anywhere on the itinerary.

Why Choose This Trek

The Kaghan Valley and Babusar Pass Trek offers Pakistan's finest accessible valley mountain experience in a region that has well-developed tourism infrastructure and consistently pleasant summer weather. For visitors who want mountain lakes, alpine meadows, and high-altitude pass views without the remote-expedition logistics of the Karakoram, the Kaghan Valley is the right choice. It is also excellent as an introduction to Pakistan's northern mountains for first-time visitors before committing to more demanding routes. All transport from Islamabad, accommodation in Naran hotels, meals, and guide services are included.

Things To know

  • Standard adventure travel insurance covering trekking in Pakistan up to 4,500 metres is sufficient for this tour.
  • The maximum altitude is the Babusar Pass at 4,173 metres, reached by vehicle not on foot.
  • The nearest major hospitals are in Abbottabad (for the Kaghan section) and Gilgit (after the pass crossing). Both are within 3 to 4 hours of the upper valley.

The upper Kaghan Valley above Naran is home to a rich alpine ecosystem. The area carries snow leopard (rarely seen), Himalayan black bear, Himalayan ibex, musk deer, and a variety of raptors including lammergeier and golden eagle. The wildflower diversity in the meadows above 3,000 metres is particularly rich in July and August, with species including Himalayan poppy, gentian, and various primulas. The Lulusar Lake area is one of the best bird-watching locations in KPK for high-altitude species.

The Kaghan Valley receives hundreds of thousands of Pakistani visitors between June and September, making it one of the busiest domestic tourism corridors in the country. This creates a distinctive travel atmosphere: crowded roads and bazaars in the lower valley towns, local food stalls everywhere, the sound of music and the smell of cooking fires at roadside stops, and the general energy of Pakistani family tourism at its most enthusiastic.

For international visitors, this Pakistani domestic tourism scene is itself an interesting part of the experience. The upper valley above Naran becomes significantly quieter and the Lulusar camping area beyond the main day-tripper turn-around point is peaceful by Pakistani standards even in peak season.

FAQs

Is the Babusar Pass road open to all vehicles?

The Babusar Pass road is open to regular 4x4 vehicles from approximately late June to mid-October depending on snowfall. Normal saloon cars cannot cross the upper section reliably even in peak summer. We use proper 4x4 vehicles throughout the Kaghan and Babusar section. The road is paved in the lower valley and unpaved on the upper sections near the pass.

Is the Kaghan Valley suitable for families?

Yes. The Kaghan Valley is one of Pakistan's most popular domestic family tourism destinations. The walks are short and gentle. Saiful Muluk Lake involves a short walk or jeep ride. Lulusar Lake is flat. Children from about 4 years old can enjoy this tour comfortably. The altitude at the pass may cause mild headache in some children but the time spent at the top is brief.

What is the best view of Nanga Parbat on this route?

The best view of Nanga Parbat from this route is from the Babusar Pass top on a clear morning before clouds build, and from the Karakoram Highway near Raikot Bridge on the drive to Chilas. From the pass you see the north side of the mountain. From the KKH near Raikot Bridge you see the dramatic Rakhiot face. Both require clear weather which is most reliable in early morning.

How crowded is Naran in peak season?

July and August are peak domestic tourist season in Kaghan. Naran gets very crowded on weekends and Pakistani holidays. Hotels fill quickly and Saiful Muluk Lake can be packed with visitors. We recommend June or September for a quieter experience. If you go in peak season, book accommodation well in advance and visit Saiful Muluk Lake on a weekday morning for the best experience.

What is Saiful Muluk Lake famous for?

Saiful Muluk Lake is famous for its association with a Punjabi Sufi legend about a fairy princess who fell in love with a human prince at the lake. The lake is also believed to have supernatural significance in local folklore. Beyond the legend, the lake's extraordinary colour, the surrounding mountain scenery, and the reflection of Malika Parbat in the water make it genuinely one of Pakistan's most beautiful natural sites.
